On behalf of the company Erbenobili located in Corato (Bari) C.da Torre Pavone ZI, we conducted an experiment to assess the microbiological tending to evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal activity in vitro of the two products that the company sells under the name of Erbenobili srl 'Propolis Fitomater' and 'PropGola'.
For the execution of the experimental part, the Company has provided us two samples of the products in question, most of which are kept at the laboratory of this University Department. According to the statements provided to us by the company the products being tested have the following composition (v / v). PropGola 15 ml Btl Throat Spray: Propolis 55% Hedge Mustard 20% ,Tea Tree Oil 0.0015%, Eucalyptus Oil 0.0045%, Manuka Oil 0.0045%.
The experimental part was devoted to the determination of microbiostatic and microbicide by using this product with 6 bacterial strains gram negative and gram positive and two fungal strains belonging to the species of Candida albicans.
The bacterial strains and fungi are used in the international collection from ATCC and partly from clinical isolates recently performed at the Laboratory of Bacteriology and Mycology from Professor Maria Teresa Montagna (Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Human Oncology).
The results for the microorganisms tested were as follows (refer to dilution of the product and to the amount in mg/ml):

The products was assayed by serial dilution in doubling (microdilution) according to the procedures CLSI M27-A2 and A6 CLSI M7 and dilutions were made in culture medium Muller Hinton for bacteria species or in RPMI for fungi, the microorganisms were inoculated in microtiter plate and allowed to develop for 24h at 37 °, in contact with the product supplied. The dilutions of the product range was tested from 1:8 up to 1: 512. Particular attention was made to the presence of ethyl alcohol in the preparation (it is known that the alcohol alone is able to exert microbicidal action). We have submitted the alcohol to an assessment of antimicrobial activity that showed its inaction in the percentages and quantities available during its evaluation of the test. The evaluation was carried out by means of verifying the growth in comparison with a positive control in the absence of the product itself. In the context of the test that was being carried out also a negative control was being made with the use of a well-known antibiotic. (Norfloxacin and Fluconazole)

The activities of the product contrary to other products of various companies evaluated in this laboratory operating in this sector, it is net and accentuated in both antifungal and antibacterial, in fact the dilutions of the product up to 256 times, it continues to exert a high elevated antibacterial and antifungal activity. Our experiments also found a strong bactericidal and fungicidal in dilution equal to 1:64 demonstrating a strong propensity of the products with antimicrobial activity as mentioned before in dilutions of the same very accentuated.
In the past, this laboratory has repeatedly attempted evaluation of propolis products in the form of spray or prepared in ethanol, (of other companies) to no avail, the products declared a concentrations of propolis that the practical analysis did not show any antimicrobial efficacy.
The analysis of the data collected from the research carried out on the product based on propolis commercialized by the company Erbenobili allows to draw the following considerations:
a) Has demonstrated antibacterial and anti-fungal ability definitely accentuated up to 1:256 dilution.
b) The bactericidal and fungicidal is explicit in an optimum manner up to 1:128 dilution.
c) Also excellent antifungal activity vs. C. albicans. One aspect of this non secondary in relation to the pathology that this microorganism is capable of inducing of the oral cavity level.
d) Compared to other products tested in the past demonstrating their undoubted effectiveness.
In conclusion, this product for the response observed in our vitro experimentation are herbal supplements with a disinfectant activity and antiseptic properties.
