Flora Pringle is a real “Willamina Wonka”, cooking up new and innovative candies.
June 2017 - Brooklyn, NY – It’s not yet 6 am and scientist, CEO and Brooklyn “momtrepreneur” Flora Pringle is reading up on harmful effects of sugar. This is far from casual reading. A busy mother of two, Pringle is also the CEO and founder of Brooklyn based sugar-free candy success Cracked Candy, LLC.
Pringle’s professional journey started in her native England. Flora’s love of sweet things began as a child. After gaining an Oxford education in the sciences, then excelling in marketing and teaching science, Pringle moved to the US and created her innovative candy company drawing on her experiences. When she became a mom, sugar-free options became an imperative. Flora stumbled on the plant based sweetener Xylitol, which sparked her unique innovation.
Pringle was attracted to Xylitol’s low glycemic index, which makes it a popular sugar substitute among diabetics. Xylitol also has a positive impact on dental health. With her key ingredient in hand, she developed a unique formula that cracked the candy code, resulting in one of the trendy Brooklyn food scene’s most successful start-ups, Cracked Candy LLC.
“Candy makes us happy,” says Pringle. “Our mission at Cracked Candy is to make candy that provides all the happiness, great taste and sense of indulgence you want in a candy without the harmful effects of sugar.” Pringle’s Cracked Candy innovation comes at an important time. Sugar intake among Americans has tripled in the last decade and there is increasing concern about sugar’s contribution to tooth decay, obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
“Besides our secret formula, which allows for exceptional taste without sugar, our candy’s unique format also sets us apart, as does the nostalgic English tin box packaging and our commitment to providing work opportunities for people with disabilities,” said Pringle.
Pringle’s recipe is made in sheets. The candy is then cracked into shard-like pieces, about 50 pieces to each tin. Cracked Candy comes in four flavors: cool icy peppermint, luscious orange, tangy sweet Lemon Ice and warming Cinnamon. Pringle is currently working on new flavors for launch later this year. Cracked Candy is sold nationally in hundreds of stores, including Wegmans, NY Whole Foods, major airports, and many premium grocery stores.
